The Basics

Guided tours take visitors through the grounds, sharing the history and ever-changing purpose of each building. Most notable is the story behind the Record Tower, the only remaining building from the original medieval structure that has miraculously survived centuries worth of fires and warfare that ravaged the other buildings. Other noteworthy areas include the Chester Beatty Library and the Dubhlinn Gardens, which now grow over the spot where there was once a black pool (‘dubh linn’) from which the city of Dublin gets its name.

The long and rich history behind this complex is enough reason to tour Dublin Castle. Even those who are not history buffs will find something of interest within the vast castle grounds. Plan to spend about two hours at the castle learning about Irish history and exploring the lavishly decorated private quarters and entertaining halls of the State Apartments, the State Bedrooms, St. Patrick’s Hall, the State Drawing Room, the Chapel Royal, the Medieval Undercroft, and the Throne Room.

My guide was awesome! I know this review is really late, but I am so glad that they waited for me, my flight was delayed in the US and by the time I got there, I was running, but so glad that I made it. Great info.

COVID-19 be Damned! A Tour of Dublin with your mates

Fast-track Easy Access Book of Kells Tour with Dublin Castle
In spite of the chaos surrounding COVID-19 and all the closures, Neil took the time to meet us anyway, having missed the notification that Trinity College had been completely closed to tourists. Our first day in Dublin was saved! We got a private tour filled with laughs and education on the city and history of Dublin, including Dublin Castle. As our host said, it felt as though it were a walk on the town with your mates. We had a great experience! Thank you Neil!!

Fast-track Easy Access Book of Kells Tour with Dublin Castle
We had a very nice time on our tour of the Book of Kells and the exterior of Dublin Castle. Our tour guide, Brian, was very knowledgable and full of passion and enthusiasm. We enjoyed all of the history Brian was able to share and appreciated the stories he told along the way. This was our second walking tour of our week-long trip to Ireland, and would recommend it for adult travelers.

Fast-track Easy Access Book of Kells Tour with Dublin Castle
Our guide Neil was very knowledgeable and entertaining - I learned so much and especially enjoyed the easy visit to the library. I also would use Viator again; it was my first time (recommended by a friend) and although I had to change my dates and had several questions by email, their staff were quick to respond and helpful -- important when you're traveling in a strange place.

We had a fantastic time on this tour, our tour guide Brian Malloy was brilliant so informative and interesting. He quickly worked out the stories and places that would be of interest to us and kept us engaged and excited the whole tour. Trinity college library is a must see for anyone visiting Dublin and having such a good guide made it even better.

Our guide for the day was Ms Anne Gildea who was exceptionally friendly and warm. She knows her content and was excellent in her storytelling -- engaging and humourous! She is always happy to answer our questions and share personal anecdotes along the way, and doesn't forget to speak to each of us in the group so no one feels left out. I really love her energy and thoroughly enjoyed the session. Strongly recommended to anyone who wants to know Dublin and enjoys a good walking tour.

Great Tour of Trinity College and Dublin

Fast-track Easy Access Book of Kells Tour with Dublin Castle
We were lucky enough to have a small group and a vivacious tour guide in Neil. Even though the day was a bit cold and rainy, we really enjoyed our trip. Neil was an incredible guide as we learned about the Book of Kells (currently not on display, but replaced with a certified copy) and Trinity College. Once we left the college, the tour turned into a general Dublin tour, which was perfect for us. Highly, highly suggested.
