The Basics

The ruins of Sacsayhuaman (Saqsaywaman) are close enough to Cusco to explore in a few hours; together, the ruins and city make up a large UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guided half-day tours often include stpos at Tambomachay, Qorikancha, Puca Pucara, or Qenqo, while a full-day excursion allows time for Cusco’s top attractions as well. To see the ruins from a different perspective, opt for a horseback riding tour; or, for a deep dive into the Inca empire, embark on a multi-day tour from Cusco to Machu Picchu that stops at Sacsayhuaman along the way.

Horseback Riding: Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puca Pucara, Tambomachay
Guides were super knowledgeable, and I appreciated their commitment to making our experience memorable. We had a great time with the horses, and even got to do some galloping! 100% would recommend to a friend, or anyone looking to explore Cusco in a new and exciting way

Horseback Riding Plus Tour to Sacsayhuaman, Quenqo, Puka Pucara and Tambomachay
My wife and I had an amazing experience in this tour with our tour guide Jenny. One major regret was not wearing sun screen even though it was cloudy all day, so please plan accordingly. The horse back riding is exciting as the horses trot from time-to-time.

Private Half-Day Historical Cusco with Sacsayhuaman
I would rate 6 stars if I could! Our guide, Richard, was punctual, welcoming, and most importantly for me, extremely well informed. We never felt rushed and he was always able to answer questions thoughtfully and intelligently. We truly enjoyed spending time with him and were, of course dazzled by the ruins we visited. Though I don’t know his name, I’d also like to compliment our driver. The car was comfortable and immaculate and he was extremely courteous and a very skilled driver. I highly recommend this experience too anyone visiting Cusco!

Half Day Cusco City Tour and Archeological Park of Sacsayhuaman
We have been on several Viator tours in different parts of the world and have been impressed by the quality and expertise of their guides. The tour with Niko was a revelation, rich with history, humour and a clear passion for the Inca culture. It was no surprise to find out that he was previously a professor of history. He so fired up our interest and imagination that it was almost as if we were living the history of the Inca civilisation and the centuries that preceded and followed it. It was a profoundly rewarding afternoon and we left feeling immensely grateful to have had the privilege of his wisdom and knowledge.

Cusco 4-Hour Private Tour Including Sacsayhuaman and Qenqo
We had this on the day we will leave Cusco on the way back to reality and we had a pretty amazing stay in Peru so far thus we expected the least. But our guide showed up prepared and well versed in the Inca empire. Just touring around the temples and the fortresses we were able to pick up from him the richness in architecture of the people of Peru. He showed great love for his roots and this showed in the way he speaks of his ancestors. The last 4 hours came as a breeze. Best city tour we had.

Cusco 4-Hour Private Tour Including Sacsayhuaman and Qenqo
We like to do historical tours of the places that we visit, and this tour was great! Our guide provided great information and answered all of our questions about the sites and Cusco in general. The itinerary was perfect for what we were interested in too.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Sacsayhuaman is a great option for time-pressed travelers and history buffs.

  • Don’t forget to bring your camera; the panoramic views of Cusco from an altitude of 12,139 feet (3,700 meters) are stunning.

  • Tours visiting the Sacsayhuaman ruins last anywhere from three hours to a full day.

  • Bring along sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, as the sun at high altitude can be intense.

  • The Sacsayhuaman ruins are not wheelchair or stroller accessible.

How to Get There

It takes about 30 minutes to walk to the ruins from the Plaza de Armas via a steep trail. Those who’d prefer an easier route should take a taxi or join a guided tour to the Inca site 1 mile (2 kilometers) north of Cusco.

When to Get There

While it’s possible to visit the archaeological site throughout the year, the best time to go is between June and September when rain is less likely. Arrive early to escape the largest crowds and enjoy the ruins to yourself.

Inti Raymi Festival of the Sun

Each year on the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere (June 21), Cusco celebrates its most famous festival, Inti Raymi or Festival of the Sun. The second-largest festival in South America includes a huge procession to Sacsayhuaman, where sacred rites and traditional dances take place in the grand square of the fortress. Entry is free during the festival, and food and drink vendors come out to keep the crowds sated.
