Rookery Building Tours

Rookery Building
An official Chicago landmark and an architectural masterpiece, the Rookery Building was one of the city's tallest and most expensive buildings when it was completed in 1888. A 1905 renovation by Frank Lloyd Wright transformed the lobby into a light-filled courtyard admired by office workers and visitors to this day.

The Basics
Take a Chicago architecture tour that stops inside the Rookery Building for a glimpse of the Frank Lloyd Wright–designed lobby and to learn about the building’s history and architectural details from a guide. Or, simply stop by the lobby, which is open to the public, to admire the white marble columns, bronze chandeliers, gilded staircases, and iron-lace ceiling that allows sunlight to stream into the courtyard.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Rookery is a functional office space, but visitors are welcome in the lobby.
  • The original structure was designed by architects Daniel Burnham and John Root.
  • Modern building upgrades have made the Rookery the world’s oldest LEED Gold–certified high–rise.
  • There's a sandwich shop inside the building, with more dining options in the surrounding Loop neighborhood.
  • How to Get There
  • The Rookery Building is located at the intersection of LaSalle and Adams streets in downtown Chicago’s Loop district. Parking in the area is limited. To reach the building by public transport, take the L Blue Line to the Monroe or Quincy stations.

When to Get There
The Rookery Building is open during the day on weekdays, with shorter hours on Saturday. The lobby and galleria is a great place to warm when it's chilly.

Attractions Near the Rookery
A visit to the Rookery fits easily into a day of downtown Chicago sightseeing. Stroll past other landmark buildings, including the Chicago Board of Trade Building, Willis Tower, and Maquette Building. Get cultured at the Art Institute of Chicago and Museum of Contemporary Arts, or watch your reflection in the shiny Cloud Gate sculpture at Millennium Park.
Address: 209 South LaSalle Street, Chicago, Illinois 60604, USA

Architecture of Money and Power: Chicago Financial District Walking Tour

Architecture of Money and Power: Chicago Financial District Walking Tour

Discover opulent architecture of Chicago's financial district and hear secret stories of the rich and powerful Architecture on this financial district walking tour will range from sleek Art Deco to glittering post-modern, with buildings constructed from the late 1800s into more recent times. We also venture to the “back door” of the Board of Trade. Here a time-warp exists in the middle of downtown Chicago, with historic bars, an old school pizza joint, a pawn shop, and the rickety tracks of the "L" train. In keeping with Chicago Detours’ mission to explore stories and places locals don’t know, this tour will either tell lesser known stories behind famous buildings or take guests into buildings they might not normally notice right in the heart of the financial district.
