The Caves of the Eagle (Cuevas del Águila) site is a grotto complex of limestone stalactites and stalagmites hidden under an expansive oak forest on Romperropas Hill. In the company of a guide, visitors can explore the area and learn about both the history of the caves and their accidental discovery.

The Basics

Since 1964, visitors have been able to venture below ground and explore the marvelous stalactite and stalagmite formations of the Caves of the Eagle. Take a guided tour of the caves, and learn about the geology and history of these caverns, which were naturally carved out of Paleozoic limestone roughly 500 million years ago and have continued to evolve since.

How to Get There

The Caves of the Eagle is situated in the Tiétar Valley in Arenas de San Pedro, just south of Ávila and within easy reach of Madrid. To drive to the site, follow the A-5 freeway towards Badajoz, take exit 123, and continue down the N-502 to Ramacastañas.

When to Get There

The Caves of the Eagle are open daily all year round, and the temperature inside remains stable at 100% humidity and roughly 17°C (62.6°F). Opening hours vary seasonally.

After visiting the Caves of the Eagle, explore the rest of what the Tiétar Valley has to offer: Hike, mountain bike, or ride a horse through the landscapes of the Sierra de Gredos mountain range, exploring gorges and lagoons along the way, or learn about bumblebees at the Abejas del Valle Museum in nearby Poyales del Hoyo.
