The Basics

On Bernauer Strasse, the Berlin Wall Memorial is made up of an original section of the wall and a gun turret. Visit the memorial and various portions of the wall on a small-group tour to learn about the area's history among other travelers, or on a private historian-led tour for an in-depth, personalized experience. Bike tours, Segway tours, and walking tours are all great ways to see the wall's various remaining sections spread across the city, as well as Checkpoint Charlie, the infamous border-crossing spot between the two sides.

Great value for money
Really interesting tour and well worth doing to get to know the city. It's a half-day tour so bring supplies but there is also a stop at a cafe for bathroom and refreshments.

Discover Berlin Half-Day Walking Tour
This leisurely walking tour is the perfect introduction to historic Berlin. Our knowledgeable guide Sebastian told Berlin’s story with verve and humor, making the morning thoroughly enjoyable. When choosing a walking tour in Berlin, choose this one and ask for Sebastian.

2 hour 15 min Berlin Wall Self Drive Trabant Tour
We squeezed our young teens in the back and set out on our Trabi adventure. Saw all the sights in a whistle stop tour in our line of Trabi’s. German and English spoken. Great option for a rain-soaked day.

Discover Berlin Half-Day Walking Tour
We had a bit of a stroke of luck in that having opted for the German tour we found we were the only people on it and it turned out to have been a great decision. Tom was a fantastic guide. Speaking mainly in German nice and clearly and switching to English from time to time when needed so we got a German lesson thrown in as well! he is very knowledgeable and a very nice guy. We learnt a great deal about Berlin which is a truly fascinating city.

Discover Berlin Half-Day Walking Tour
This tour was a great overview of all the historical sites you can visit in Berlin in 4 hours. Since it is time-bound, dont expect to explore each place in detail. It starts with the Berlin Cathedral, moves on to Museum Island, Humboldt University, Checkpoint Charlie, the remains of the Berlin Wall and ends at the beautifully lit Brandenburg Gate. Chris (the Canadian) was our tour guide, and he was really good at explaining the history and culture of these places. Definitely recommend.

PRIVATE BEHIND THE BERLIN WALL and COLD WAR BERLIN TOUR
We were very lucky to be assigned Aaron whose knowledge is exceptional and his enthusiasm on the subject was infectious. The tour takes you to all the expected locations and Aaron goes into as much detail as you can handle explaining each site. A great tour with a truly great guide. A word of warning though, there is some traveling via public transport required so extra expense is required which was unexpected.

Explore The Berlin Wall: Cold War Berlin and Behind the Berlin Wall
Fantastic guide with excellent Cold War knowledge. The tour will take you to a few hidden gems in Berlin

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Berlin Wall Memorial features a visitor center, where you can get an overview of Berlin wall sites and watch a historical film, plus the Documentation Center with its exhibits and the Chapel of Reconciliation, where prayers services are held.

  • The longest and most interesting remaining stretch of the wall is the open-air East Side Gallery, set on Mühlenstrasse featuring murals painted by international artists in 1990 and again in 2009.

  • Because Berlin's reunification was so successful, it can be difficult to tell the difference between east and west in many parts of the city. Look for the double row of cobblestones to guide you along certain sections of the wall’s course.

How to Get to the Berlin Wall

The almost 100-mile-long (160-km) Berliner Mauerweg is a multi-use path that runs along the former wall, with 40 multilingual information stations posted along the way. In other parts of the city, lengths of the wall are covered in psychedelic graffiti, like that at the East Side Gallery on Mühlenstrasse. Sections of the wall also remain near the former site of the Gestapo headquarters.

Berlin Sights Along the Wall

It's ironic that Berlin's most popular attraction, for the most part, no longer exists. Because the Berlin Wall disappears and reappears around the city, you can see several of the German capital's most important landmarks as you visit the wall. Museum Island, Potsdamer Platz, and the Brandenburg Gate can be seen easily on a bicycle tour, weather permitting.
