The Basics

One of the most famous landmarks in all of China, Tiananmen Square and its 125-foot-high (39-meter-high) granite Monument to the People’s Heroes features on just about every Beijing tour. Visitors from around the globe come to have their picture taken in front of the photo of Chairman Mao mounted on the monumental Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tiananmen). For those pressed for time, it’s possible to visit the Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Forbidden City, and Tiananmen Square in a single day.

Private Layover Tour: Mutianyu Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, and Forbidden City
We had a great day! I was interested in this kind of tour as we had a 13 hour layover and knew this would be the easiest way to see the most! Linda's driver met us inside the airport and took us to meet Linda. She was great!! The most convenient door to door tour! Highly recommend if you are looking for a day trip from the airport.

Beijing Small-Group Tour: Mutianyu Great Wall, Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City
We really didn't know what to expect as this was the first time using this website and service. This was the highlight of our trip. Lucy of Discover Beijing Tours did an excellent job. She participated and she was encouraging. She was knowledgable with very specific details, The various places scheduled to visit in a day were well timed out. Lunch was very good. Really nice restaurant with good food for any culture. The whole day was better than expected, Thank you for a memorable day.

Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City Half Day Trip
This was a great tour for a morning in Beijing. It was very interesting to hear about a lot of Chinese history during the Golden Week from our guide who is studying to get her PHD in Chinese History. Both locations were very busy, but our guide picked spots at each location where we could walk and stand and be out of the way of the crowds. I would highly recommend this half day tour!

Beijing Essential Full-Day Tour including Great Wall at Badaling, Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square
The tour was well done. Our Guide was Liu and he was very good. He took a lot of extra steps to ensure a good trip. He also had a lot of knowledge. What we didn’t like is the lunch stop. Food was cold and poor standard. Rest trip was good with some jade store stop where we didn’t buy anything. Neither did others. So the store was very unhappy. It showed on their faces.

Beijing Mini Group Day Tour: Great Wall, Forbidden City and Tiananmen
Our tour guide was kitty and she was great. Super accommodating and knowledgeable. Mutianyu was breathtaking. we took the cable car up and the views were amazing. We also did a tea tasting at a tea house on the premises and it was a dope experience. The forbidden city was huge and there were lots of people there but Kitty and her chicken on a stick led the way. I would recommend this tour and Kitty as your guide.

Private Tour-Tiananmen Square,Forbidden City,Temple of Heaven with Lunch
This tour covered a lot of ground in a single day! I can’t imagine having to navigate the HUGE crowds of Tianeman square and MASSIVE grounds of the Forbidden Palace without a guide or native Chinese speaker. Gary was a helpful guide and very knowledgeable. He also did well to avoid the crowds, which was much appreciated, although sometimes he would wait elsewhere and send us into the crowds alone and it was difficult to find him afterward. We took his suggestion to stop at a tea factory that was a nice bonus— they were trying to promote and sell their product pretty hard, but I can’t blame them after a free 25 minute free tea ceremony/ tasting. The lunch was great, although it was relatively restricted options (pick between two dishes, extra charge for Peking duck; only water for drink). Overall, would recommend the visit and this tour!

A Great Way to See the Classics!

Private City Tour By Public Transportation: Temple Of Heaven, Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City
My husband and I very much enjoyed our private tour of the Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square, and the Forbidden City. We recently moved to Beijing, so learning how to work the public transportation was exceptionally valuable to us. Our tour guide was very helpful with making sure we knew the ropes, and even went out of his way to help us procure permanent subway passes! We were very grateful. My one complaint was that our tour guide was on his phone far too much. I would not expect any tour guide while working to be on their phone, but the amount of texting and phone calls that went on was very unprofessional. We would of course been understanding had their been a family emergency or something of the sort, but nothing was really explained to us. We felt as if it detracted from the tour and took away from us learning things about the sites we were visiting.

Private Classic Beijing Tour: Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City and Summer Palace
Although we had seen many photos, the size of these attractions was something to behold. We also visited on a major Chinese holiday and I have never seen so many people in one place at one time - it was simply a sea of people. Our guide was great - navigating through the throngs as well as anyone could possibly do. Having a car and driver separate from the guide was a Godsend - we never could have gotten anywhere without them. I would recommend going private - you see and learn so much more, it is worth the cost.

When to Get There

The national flagpole sits within Tiananmen Square, and the flag-raising ceremony that takes place at sunrise each morning is well worth seeing. Expect big crowds and long lines at the Forbidden City and Mao’s Mausoleum during peak tourist season in summer and on Chinese public holidays.
