The Basics

The temple buildings are rich in symbolic detail, including variations on the number nine, which represents the emperor; colored glazes that signify heaven and earth; and pillars that represent the months of the year, seasons, and time. There are also echo stones where you can stand to hear your voice reverberate and a circular echo wall that carries your whisper to the far side of the circle.

The UNESCO-listed Temple of Heaven ranks among Beijing’s most famous attractions and features on many city tours, along with the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, and Tiananmen Square; some tours include the Great Wall of China. Those with a particular interest in the temple’s history can opt for a private tour to hear more about its rich spiritual symbolism. It’s also possible to combine a temple visit with a tai chi class in the surrounding park.

Temple of Heaven Private Tour and Tea Tasting at Maliandao Tea Street
This was the best tour ever! Our guide Lucy was very nice and helpful. We learned a lot of fascinating information about the temple of heaven and we enjoyed the tea tasting in Maliando a lot. If you are a tea lover this is definitely a tour for you!

Tiananmen, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace Group Bus Tour
The tour was good, sent to the three advertised stops and two more (the traditional chinese medicine institute for a foot massage and a pearl shop). The two added stops were partially for shopping, partially cultural. The tours were good, learned a lot more than I would have without.

Private Day Trip of Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and Summer Palace
Had a fantastic day out in Beijing visiting most of the highlights - sadly the Forbidden City & T Square were closed due to an event but this did not deter from me having a great time in a fantastic city. Driver and guide were both lovely and very professional/helpful throughout the day - would definitely use again on future visits...

Summer Palace and Temple Of Heaven Private Tour
Helena was a fantastic tour guide. She showed up early, asked what we wanted to focus on and even took and emailed pictures back to us. Very personable, knowledgeable and friendly. She gave us a history lesson, information about art/ architecture and checked to make sure she was addressing our interests. On the way back to our hotel, she even helped us learn more about places we had visited days before. Excellent tour guide. Driver was really amazing too.

This is a must see tour. Mason was a fantastic host and very knowledgeable. Pick up was on schedule as well which is commendable given the traffic. Great day.

Private tour of Temple of Heaven, Hutong & Summer Palace
Solid tour despite the 2 mandatory shopping stops which shouldn’t be required on a private tour. Good information and nice pace. The Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square were closed during our visit so this was an ideal itinerary.

Private Tour: Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square, Summer Palace and Forbidden City
My son and I enjoyed a great day with our guide Shanshan. She made the day a very relaxed and memorable one. With her help we navigated the crowds at each venue and the lunch that was organised was wonderful. All in all a fabulous day. Thank you Shanshan

This was a superb day, mostly due to our tour guide called Shanshan. She was amazing, so knowledgeable, helpful, informative and relaxed. Shanshan is so good, they named her twice!

Private Tour-Tiananmen Square,Forbidden City,Temple of Heaven with Lunch
This tour covered a lot of ground in a single day! I can’t imagine having to navigate the HUGE crowds of Tianeman square and MASSIVE grounds of the Forbidden Palace without a guide or native Chinese speaker. Gary was a helpful guide and very knowledgeable. He also did well to avoid the crowds, which was much appreciated, although sometimes he would wait elsewhere and send us into the crowds alone and it was difficult to find him afterward. We took his suggestion to stop at a tea factory that was a nice bonus— they were trying to promote and sell their product pretty hard, but I can’t blame them after a free 25 minute free tea ceremony/ tasting. The lunch was great, although it was relatively restricted options (pick between two dishes, extra charge for Peking duck; only water for drink). Overall, would recommend the visit and this tour!

Private City Tour By Public Transportation: Temple Of Heaven, Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City
My husband and I very much enjoyed our private tour of the Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square, and the Forbidden City. We recently moved to Beijing, so learning how to work the public transportation was exceptionally valuable to us. Our tour guide was very helpful with making sure we knew the ropes, and even went out of his way to help us procure permanent subway passes! We were very grateful. My one complaint was that our tour guide was on his phone far too much. I would not expect any tour guide while working to be on their phone, but the amount of texting and phone calls that went on was very unprofessional. We would of course been understanding had their been a family emergency or something of the sort, but nothing was really explained to us. We felt as if it detracted from the tour and took away from us learning things about the sites we were visiting.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Temple of Heaven is a must-see for first-time visitors to Beijing.

  • Many of the outdoor areas surrounding the temple are wheelchair accessible, but the only building accessible to wheelchairs is the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests.

  • Give yourself at least 90 minutes to tour the temple grounds.

  • Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking over uneven surfaces.

When to Get There

The Temple of Heaven is open daily, but one of the best times to visit is early in the morning when locals show up to practice tai chi, sword fighting, or traditional Chinese dance. Later in the day, you’ll see groups of elderly Beijingers playing chess or cards in the shade of the park’s long corridor.

What’s Nearby

The area near Temple of Heaven park is packed with other worthwhile attractions. The Beijing Museum of Natural History is situated near the temple’s west gate, while the Hongqiao Pearl Market is just across the road from Tiantan Dongmen subway station.
