The Basics

With so much to see at this Beijing landmark—everything from the living quarters of emperors to ceremonial rooms and galleries lined with Imperial artifacts—many visitors opt to visit with a guide who can navigate the vast complex from the Ming and Qing dynasties and point out its most interesting features. Those short on time in the Chinese capital can opt for a day tour that combines a Forbidden City visit with time at other Beijing attractions, such as Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, and the Great Wall. As well, number of gardens, museums, pagodas, and pavilions dot the area.

Fantastic!
We loved this tour! It was a small group and we all had a wonderful day together. So great to see so many sights all in one day, especially if you have limited time in Beijing. Our driver was really amazing and the tour guide was fluent in English. The lunch was delicious too. 10/10. Definitely book this!

Private Layover Tour: Mutianyu Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, and Forbidden City
We had a great day! I was interested in this kind of tour as we had a 13 hour layover and knew this would be the easiest way to see the most! Linda's driver met us inside the airport and took us to meet Linda. She was great!! The most convenient door to door tour! Highly recommend if you are looking for a day trip from the airport.

Beijing Small-Group Tour: Mutianyu Great Wall, Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City
We really didn't know what to expect as this was the first time using this website and service. This was the highlight of our trip. Lucy of Discover Beijing Tours did an excellent job. She participated and she was encouraging. She was knowledgable with very specific details, The various places scheduled to visit in a day were well timed out. Lunch was very good. Really nice restaurant with good food for any culture. The whole day was better than expected, Thank you for a memorable day.

Good way to discover Forbidden city and the great wall in one day. All the organisation is perfect (except the traffic to come back to Beijing) and the guide was really nice and efficient.

Jimmy was absolutely amazing, not only is he knowledgeable and kind, he also made sure we saw all the unmissable spots and was very patient with us, particularly with our need for some rest under some very cold weather! Many thanks Jimmy for making our visit an unforgettable experience.

4-Hour Private Beijing Walking Tour of the Forbidden City
I set up the tour at the last minute and was nervous about the details. My tour guide Jimmy was the best. It was 29 degrees that day, I told him I wanted to see a lot of the city. We rode the subway, got to the square, he was knowledgeable and all around awesome. Even gave me the gloves off his hands because I was so cold. If you are thinking about this tour, do it! Request Jimmy, best tour guide!! Would highly recommend.

Private Beijing Layover Tour: Mutianyu Great Wall and Forbidden City with Cable Car and Meal
Our personal tour guide, Linda, was awesome. She was courteous and accommodating to our schedule, as we were on a layover tour. She was very knowledgeable and informative on the sites visited. She was personable yet professional and knew exactly which routes to take to avoid the crowds. Appreciate how helpful she was in capturing our memories and knowing the best photo-ops. Great experience!

Tiananmen, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace Group Bus Tour
The tour was good, sent to the three advertised stops and two more (the traditional chinese medicine institute for a foot massage and a pearl shop). The two added stops were partially for shopping, partially cultural. The tours were good, learned a lot more than I would have without.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Choose between a standard entrance ticket and a city tour that includes access to the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace.

  • For a more personal experience of the Forbidden City and other Beijing highlights, choose a private tour.

  • As many as 80,000 people visit the Forbidden City daily, so it’s best to book ahead or book a tour that includes skip-the-line access.

  • The Forbidden City offers little shade, so bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water if visiting on a warm day.

  • Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a fair amount of walking.

How to Get There

Arriving by public transport or walking is preferred over taxi, as taxis are not allowed to stop nearby. Take the subway Line 1 to Tiananmen West or Tiananmen East, or catch one of the many buses going to Gugong.

When to Get There

To avoid crowds at this popular Beijing attraction, it’s best to visit first thing in the morning when the ticket office opens. Avoid weekends and Chinese national holidays.

Best View of the Forbidden City

Before or after touring the Forbidden City, it’s nice to get a sense of its size by seeing it from above. Jingshan Park, located just across from the palace’s north gate, is home to the highest point in Beijing and affords the best panoramic, bird’s-eye view of the Forbidden City.
