The Basics

During summer, small Paihia—one of New Zealand’s most popular resort towns—teems with sun-seeking tourists. From the harbor you can catch cruises out to Cape Brett and the Hole in the Rock, go parasailing above the bay, or kayak down the Waitangi River to Haruru Falls. Divers can take wreck tours from Paihia to theRainbow Warrior at Matauri Bay and the HMNZSCanterbury at Deep Water Cove.

There are a number of nature walks branching out from Paihia to the nearby Opua Forest and Horotutu Scenic Reserve. You can also walk to Waitangi, home to the grounds where New Zealand’s founding document was signed in 1840. For more history, catch a ferry across the harbor to Russell (Kororāreka), briefly the capital of the new colony of New Zealand. Or simply swim and sunbathe at Paihia Beach, an easy-to-access stretch along Paihia’s northern coastline.

Wonderful, informative cruise on a very safe and comfortable ship. We got great pictures of dolphins up close and of the beautiful scenery. The captain crew was great the food on the island was very good. I highly recommend this trip and the cost was very reasonable.

Half-Day Bay of Islands Discovery Tour from Paihia
We had a lovely day as the weather was great for swimming. I think it might have been different on a wet day. This cruise was lovely, even though the water was too rough to go through the hole in the rock it was still worth seeing. The crew were informative ..and the lunch was tasty!!!

Half-Day Bay of Islands Discovery Tour from Paihia
Going to the island for lunch was the highlight - you get a good feeling of the Bay of Islands being out there. I eat vegan and gluten free and lunch was perfect for me. If I did it again, I would have taken the early boat to the island and late boat back - there were nice tracks to walk, kayak and snorkel rentals and a beautiful beach to swim. Even with almost 2 hours there, I could have stayed longer.

An excellent half day tour that showcased the very best of the Bay of Islands marine and island environments. Thank you Captain Gavin, Donna and other staff. A wonderful experience.

Cruising and Sailing near Paihia

Plenty of Paihia’s cruise operators offer day trips out to Cape Brett to see the Hole in the Rock and spot local marine wildlife, including stingrays and, if you’re lucky, dolphins. There are also dive cruises available to other spots in the bay. Travelers looking for a more luxurious sailing experience might want to book a cruise on the classic tall shipR. Tucker Thompson.
