European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) Tours
1 Review

Located in Barcelona’s Born neighborhood, the European Museum of Modern Art (Museo Europeo de Arte Moderno, or MEAM) displays a collection of contemporary figurative art from the 20th and 21st centuries. The collection features thousands of works from artists from all five continents, with a focus on young Spanish artists.
The Basics
Housed in an 18th-century mansion, MEAM’s collection is divided into three parts: contemporary realist art, modern sculpture from the 20th century, and Catalan sculpture of the 20th century. Many of the works on display are from living artists supported by the museum’s parent foundation. Architecture tours of the city sometimes stop for a look at the building’s facade, and it’s easy to stop in to tour the collection before or after a walking tour of this medieval neighborhood.
Things to Know Before You Go
- The European Museum of Modern Art is a must-visit for art lovers and architecture buffs.
- Give yourself one to two hours to tour the collection.
- Book your tickets online ahead of time, particularly for concerts, to skip the line and avoid disappointment.
- How to Get There
- The European Museum of Modern Art is located in the heart of El Born, just around the corner from the Picasso Museum. To get there, take the Barcelona Metro to Jaume I (line 4) or ride bus 120.
When to Get There
MEAM is open from 11am to 7pm Tuesday to Sunday. The venue often hosts classical music and opera concerts on the weekends, so be sure to check the calendar before your trip to see what’s happening.
Gomis Palace
The 18th-century palace that houses MEAM was built in 1792 for a wealthy textile merchant by the name of Gomis. During the Napoleonic invasion, a commander of the French troops used the building as his personal residence. It wasn’t until 2011 that the space opened as a permanent museum.
