The Basics

The Maeklong Railway Market sits atop railway tracks, but the vendors have learned to adapt. When the siren sounds—around eight times a day—stall owners quickly move out of the way of the approaching train. Now more than 100 years old, the Maeklong Railway Market used to sell fish only. Many travelers visit independently; alternatively, opt for a guided tour that also stops at nearby floating markets.

Long day and crazy early start but good fun and the guide was fantastic. I was running late and he waited, never complained. Even went out of their way to drop us close to our hotel although we didn’t have the tour with that option. Would definitely use these guys again. Funny and informative.

Floating and Railway Market, Coconut Farm and Salt Field Tour in Thailand
Me and my husband loved the train and the market and it was nice to be able to have the ride on the long tailed boat to the floating market. It was quiet when we went. Our guide was brilliant very informative. I do feel that this is worth a visit

Half-Day Railway Market and Floating Market Tour in Thailand
Wonderful trip. Amy is great- she went over and above providing commentary on the bus en route. She even handed out refreshments, local fried bananas to try. Very careful and protective of the group. Visits very interesting. Both railway and floating markets worth seeing. Highly recommend this,

What wonderful day from our pick up to drop off. Our guide Amy was informative and professional explaining in detail all the sights and sounds we encountered she also ensured that we got the best views and service at all the locations visited. I thoroughly recommend this trip.

Amphawa Floating & Maeklong Railway Train Market Small Group Tour
A long day with a few highlights including the market itself and the amazing selection of food on offer. It's also doable with a baby, although travelling time is long. Our guide Jacky did an amazing job to point out all the interesting stuff, he was really knowledgeable and also helped us with our baby stroller on many occasions. We missed the floating boats, since they only come to the market around the weekend days. The firefly watching boat ride we would skip next time, it's not so exciting.

Half-Day Railway Market and Floating Market Tour in Thailand
Pick-up on time. Great tour guide and driver. Only one suggestion is to have more time on the train than floating market.

Private Excursion to Maeklong Railway and Floating Markets
Our tour with guide Pong was excellent. We booked a private tour and it was really nice to have only the three of us to keep track of, as the markets and the Maeklong Railway are very crowded. I especially liked all the treats he bought for us, letting us sample many of the local foods--which would have been difficult for us to do--not knowing the language. He provided lots of information, was very knowledgeable and attentive--good pace and all in all, a very enjoyable tour.

An awesome way to spend the day with excellent Historic information. Experiencing the floating market and train ride was pretty sweet. Our guide was very pleasant and super funny. Felt really comfortable from the very start.

Private Excursion to Maeklong Railway and Floating Markets
Susie was an outstanding guide for my wife and I. Susie and the driver did an excellent job taking us to everything on the itinerary and explaining the culture. We rode the train and saw a lot of markets. She was excellent and I would recommend this trip to anyone that has never been to Thailand and is looking for a nice trip to fill up half a day. This lasted about 6 hours.

Half-Day Railway Market and Floating Market Tour in Thailand
I'd rate it higher if I could. Kat was wonderful. The train trip and market were astonishing. The long tail boat ride was fun even though it was a bit uncomfortable. The floating market was interesting though it could have been a bit shorter. The little boat ride was OK. Fun to do though a bit touristy. The only downside was that the van was pretty uncomfortable for such lengthy rides.

Amphawa Floating & Maeklong Railway Train Market Small Group Tour
So my review is really about the tour itself and the execution. I would rate them 5 stars, efficient and our tour leader Oum was lovely, obviously has a passion for what he does. What can be improved is post booking communication, being left without a word till 8pm the night before is not really very helpful. We tried every contact available email, phone, etc in vain (the phone number is some Hong Kong disconnected line) it’s the online chat team that told us to wait till 8pm the night before the tour. If this is the system then maybe inform your guests that they will receive instructions then. Now the “train market” is a disappointment, not the organiser’s fault at all, it is the nature of the market itself. It is set up to attract tourists, the market itself is lovely and you will get a glimpse of Thai lifestyle and even get to sample some yummy food, however once the train comes it’s chaos and you are stuck is a sea of tourists and their mobile phones, so set your expectations. The floating market and the fireflies boat ride are definitely the highlight of the day.

Fun trip to the markets

Floating Market & Railway Market
Market tours are as described. It is a 2 hour drive to arrive at the floating market and about another 20 minutes to the railway market. Guides/drivers speak limited English, but are able to give the needed information. There are 2 boat rides at the market. A small boat thru where the venders on boats are selling their products. The second boat ride is a larger motorized boat around the outside of the market. You will be on your own to tour the markets. We are independent travelers, and ok with this tour, but if you want to be guided thru the market by a guide this is not the tour for you.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The train travels quite slowly through the market, but you should still stay well away.

  • Vendors are used to the train passing through their market, and the risks. Follow their lead and move away when they do.

  • The train’s siren is very loud, so you’re unlikely to miss it.

How to Get There

The Maeklong Railway Market is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Bangkok, in Samut Songkhram. To experience the market as a train passenger, take a train on the Maeklong Railway from Wongwian Yai station in Bangkok to the last stop, then walk back through the market. Otherwise, take the Skytrain to Victory Monument, then a minibus to the market.

When to Get There

The market usually operates between 6am and 5pm. If you want to see a train pass through, check the railway timetable. (Note that timetables change periodically, and trains may not always be on time.)

Catch the Skytrain to the Chatuchak Weekend Market

For a different train-and-market experience, hop on the BTS Skytrain to Mo Chit station in Bangkok. On Saturday and Sunday, vendors set up thousands of stalls, creating one of the largest markets in the world. You can buy practically anything at the Chatuchak Weekend Market, from fashion to food. And there’s no danger that a train will cruise through it.
