Erawan Shrine Tours

Bangkok’s Erawan Shrine is an important one, even though it is not the largest, oldest, or most grand. The small shrine dedicated to Than Tao Mahaprom—the god of creation, Brahma—sits on a busy central Bangkok street and is always surrounded by people and offerings. Visit to learn more about Thai culture.
The Basics
The Erawan Shrine was built in the 1950s after the construction of a nearby luxury hotel encountered problems. Astrologers proposed a shrine to four-faced Brahma to appease the spirits. Although Brahma is a Hindu god (Thailand is predominantly Buddhist), his presence shows the interconnectedness of Buddhism and Hinduism in Southeast Asia. Come to admire the golden shrine and watch a steady stream of visitors offer flower garlands, fruit, carvings, and donations.
The Erawan Shrine is a popular stop on many Bangkok organized sightseeing itineraries, along with other attractions such the Grand Palace, although you can also visit independently.
Things to Know Before You Go
- Unlike other temples in Bangkok, it doesn’t take long to visit the Erawan Shrine as it’s in the center of a busy commercial district.
- It’s free to visit the shrine, but offerings are appreciated, and cash donated in the boxes goes to charity.
- Thai classical dance performances are often held at the shrine; hang around long enough and you might get a free show.
- Dress and behave appropriately at the Erawan Shrine—absolutely no smoking, and avoid revealing clothing.
How to Get There
The Erawan Shrine is in the commercial Pathum Wan District, at the Ratchaprasong intersection where Ratchadamri, Rama I, and Phloen Chit roads meet. The nearest BTS Skytrain station is Chit Lom, although it’s only a short walk from the big Siam Station, too.
When to Get There
The Erawan Shrine is usually crowded, but to see locals worshipping without crowds of tourists, check it out in the early morning (between 7am and 8am) when locals stop on their way to work.
Visit the Reclining Buddha Temple
Bangkok is home to many beautiful temples and shrines, and another must-visit is Wat Pho, with its famous Reclining Buddha. The 150-foot (46-meter) golden Buddha statue rests serenely inside, and while there you can wander through other beautiful buildings and statues. Those looking to experience a traditional Thai massage can visit at a massage school on the grounds.
