The Basics

The Texas Hill Country offers a choose-your-adventure style of itinerary, depending on your interests. There are tours especially for wine lovers, taking you right into the heart of wine production in and around Fredericksburg, home of 50 wineries. If beer is more your style, spend an afternoon sampling craft brews in San Antonio. Take a day or two to explore San Antonio on a pass that includes various activities, including the Witte Museum, San Antonio Zoo, and San Antonio Museum of Art.

President Lyndon B. Johnson was born in Stonewall, a Hill Country town near Johnson City, and his sprawling estate is open for tours that provide insight into his life and presidency. Fold your tour into one that also gives you a sample of the area’s German roots, plus a stop in Luckenbach—made famous by singer Waylon Jennings.

Loved the Highlights of the Hill Country

Texas Hill Country and LBJ Tour From San Antonio
We were only in the area a short time and this was a great way to see the highlights of the TX Hill Country. LBJ Ranch park and TX White House was more interesting than I would have imagined. Learned about the German heritage with Fredericksburg and the music venue of historical Lucenbach topped off with a wine tasting. Loretta was a great guide and driver on our small Grayline vehicle, which are my favorite.

Texas Hill Country and LBJ Tour From San Antonio
Domingo the tour guide, made our trip especially nice as he was very friendly and informative. You find out so many more facts about LBJ when you go on a tour than if you would have went by yourself.

Texas Hill Country and LBJ Ranch Tour with Wine Tasting Options
Specific takeaways: LBJ’s contributions to education originating from that one room schoolhouse, Jose’s ability to read the group and personalize the tour, the charm of Luchenbach, value of farmers in our nation’s history

Texas Hill Country and LBJ Ranch Tour with Wine Tasting Options
Our tour guide/driver José Y. was excellent. His commentary was interesting, kept everyone engaged, and was accommodating to our interests. We never felt rushed at any of our stops. I particularly enjoyed the NPS Visitors’ Center at the LBJ Boyhood home displaying a timeline and history of LBJ’s life and accomplishments. Although neither the Home itself or the house at the ranch were not open inside, it’s still well worth visiting.

Texas Hill Country and LBJ Tour From San Antonio
We thoroughly enjoyed our day tour with Loretta. She was very kind and knowledgeable. The group was small (4 people). Our favorite stops were Fredricksburg, LBJ’s Airforce 1 1/2, and Luckenbach. If you like to see the countryside, you will enjoy this tour.

Texas Hill Country and LBJ Tour From San Antonio
What a great trip. We had a small group of 4 and Victor was our guide. The van was comfortable and he provided us ice cold water to stave off the Texas heat. He provided us choices along the way to customize our tour. We never felt rushed, plenty of bathroom breaks and loved the experience so much we booked the Missions tour for later in the week.

Texas Hill Country and LBJ Ranch Tour with Wine Tasting Options
Our family of 7 (including 2 children - 6yr & 9yr) had an amazing time on this tour! I was a little hesitant to book such a long trip, but it truly flowed so nicely and the kids were always entertained. Our driver, Victor, was so nice and knowledgeable! He kept everyone engaged and always checked in to make sure we were comfortable. We will definitely be recommending this tour to friends and family!! Thank you so much for an amazing day in Texas Hill Country! We learned a lot and took home so many family memories!

Is Your Dance Card Full?

The Texas Hill Country is home to some of the oldest dance halls in Texas. You can find one of them in Luckenbach, right next to the tiny post office and bar. The oldest is considered to be Gruene Hall, located in the quaint Hill Country town of Gruene (pronounced “green”).
