The Basics

Travelers come to Meteora to visit the six operational monasteries and walk the many trails in the area. To get the most out of your visit, book a tour, which will offer historical context. Full-day tours depart from Athens or Thessaloniki to Meteora, or you can make your own way to Kalampaka to enjoy a half-day group, private, or sunset tour. Adventurous travelers can also embark on a hike or do a rafting trip down the River Ionas.

Meteora Hike with Transport from Kalambaka
We took two tours in Meteora. One was a sunset tour... the second was this hiking tour. Both were excellent and in my opinion the BEST way possible to see Meteora. The hike does require some level of fitness. Chris was our guide and he did a great job of pacing the hike. The views were amazing. I would recommend.

Majestic Sunset on Meteora Rocks Tour
Chris was VERY enthusiastic... we loved his energy. He gave us theories of the geology of Meteora... stories of how the monasteries came into existence... background into the Greek-Orthodox Church... and much more. We had the best views and pictures. I would definitely recommend!

Full-Day Trip to Meteora from Thessaloniki
Was a wonderful day trip to such a majestic place. Even though it was one of very few days of rain in Greece, it added to the mystery and ambiance of Meteora! The clouds rolling in through the rocks and between the monasteries was beautiful. Our guide Lazarus was helpful and funny, a great combination! Know that running these kinds of excursions in times of Covid is difficult, precautions we 'Ok' but felt the social distancing could have been a bit better for the van journey.

Full-Day Meteora Tour from Athens by Train
Meteora is quite far from Athens (4 hours ride with a train), but the tour is definitely worth it. The scenery is unique, monasteries are really interesting and we also had a great guide. Highly recommended!

2-Day Delphi and Meteora Tour from Athens
One of the best tours I have been on! Our tour guide, Yuli (apologies for spelling), was phenomenal - she gave a ton of super interesting information, new exactly when to let us rest, and was easily able to handle all of our questions. My only critique was that we were not informed of the dress code of the Meteora monasteries prior to the tour. Women must wear skirts, so be warned!

Panoramic Meteora and all Monasteries Tour from Kalabaka
Meteora is just so beautiful!!! We wanted to make sure we visited it with a guide and we are so happy we chose this tour. She was knowledgeable about the monasteries and stopped at places for us to take picture always offering to take them. My main praise is the company itself, they were so organized. As a planner, that gave me so much confidence in them. Thank you for showing me Meteora.

Meteora Full Day Private Trip from Athens
Our day trip to Meteora was well-planned and executed. Our guide Yannis was hospitable and accommodating. He ensured that we were well taken care of from beginning to end. As for the experience at Meteora, it was breathtaking. You have to see it in order to believe it. It was well worth the 4 hour ride there and back.

This tour is a must-do when in Thessaloniki! The 3-hour train trip to and from Meteora is tiring but worth it! Dimitris was a helpful guide who gave us the chance to enjoy 3 monasteries - the views are amazing!

Private Day Trip to Meteora-Thermopylae from Athens/Pireaus
We loved this tour. We had a private driver named Mike. He was fabulous. He knew so much history about Meteora and Athens. We toured 3 monasteries and drove around the area. It's absolutely breathtaking. Lunch in town was delicious. It was a long drive, but getting all the history as we drove helped time go by. I would definitely recommend doing this tour.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Wear comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen and water, and prepare to walk—all but one of the monasteries is reached by steep steps.

  • Visitors to the monasteries must have their shoulders and knees covered, and wraps are provided at the entrance.

  • The best options for restaurants and cafes are in Kalampaka, so bring a packed lunch if you plan to spend the day.

  • Be sure to check the opening days and times of the monasteries in advance as they vary.

  • Plan to visit two or three monasteries on a day tour—to visit all six, you will need a 2-day tour.

  • St. Stephen's Monastery (Agios Stephanos) is the only wheelchair-accessible monastery.

How to Get There

Meteora is located in Thessaly, about 220 miles (355 kilometers) northwest of Athens, and is accessible by road from the towns of Kalampaka and Kastraki, just to the south. Guided tours often start from Athens, while direct buses and trains run to Kalambaka from Athens, Thessaloniki, and Delphi.

When to Get There

The monasteries are open year-round, but each is closed on a different day, so it’s important to plan ahead. July to October are most popular, and to avoid the crowds, opt for a morning tour. Out-of-season visitors encounter lower entrance fees and fewer crowds, while hikers might come in May or June, before the heat arrives.

Meteora’s Big Six

Meteora’s cliff-top monasteries were built by Eastern Orthodox hermit monks who settled in the area in the ninth century. Most visitors make a beeline for the Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron, the largest, oldest, and highest, located at around 2,000 feet (615 meters). There’s also Varlaam Monastery, founded in the 14th century by Hosios Varlaam; the dramatically situated Holy Trinity Monastery; Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas, renowned for its spectacular frescoes; 16th century Monastery of Rousanou; and the most easily accessible monastery, St. Stephen’s.
