The Basics

No surprise, this stellar national museum gets crowded. Consider purchasing a skip-the-line ticket, which lets you head right inside. To maximize your experience of the Rijksmuseum, visit with a licensed art historian, either as a private guide or on a group tour. Or combine a canal cruise with a skip-the-line ticket, allowing you to see the museum on your own schedule.

Selina was a wonderful tour guide who was very knowledgeable with every aspect of this tour. She made sure that everyone in our group was enjoying themselves and answered any questions we had. I can only hope that the next tour I do will have someone like Selina to lead the tour. Thank you for a wonderful time!!!

Skip-the-line Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Guided Museum Tour - Semi-Private 8ppl Max
I had a great time learning and viewing the art of Rijksmuseum. It was a great timing to visit the museum as it was calm and had few visitors. I’d like to thank our tour guide Cecilia for being so kind and professional and for making every story of the paintings interesting and exciting. She made sure to explain and listen/answer all our questions and points.

Private Rijksmuseum Tour: Rembrandt, van Gogh, Vermeer and more!
Our tour of the Rijksmuseum with Marten was one of the most informative, thought provoking and pleasurable guided tours we have ever experienced. We have travelled widely but we were very impressed by the knowledge and carefully planned tour of the museum. We greatly appreciated in being able to ask Marten questions and have them answered in such a knowledgable and encouraging manner. We cannot praise our tour more highly. Thank you.

Skip-the-line Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Guided Museum Tour - Private Tour
We booked a two hour private tour of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, We had four in our group and the tour was exceptional. Anita, our guide, was very knowledgeable and was very attentive to our questions. The tour was well worth the price given we were able to skip the long lines and get an up close personal look at the museum pieces.

Private Rijksmuseum Tour: Rembrandt, van Gogh, Vermeer and more!
Anna was amazing. She took us through the highlights of the museum century by century explaining the transition in art from religious to secular. Of course, there are all those hidden gems and nuances of the painting and the artist that only a devoted art historian can impart.

Skip-the-line Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Guided Museum Tour - Semi-Private 8ppl Max
Cecilia was absolutely fantastic. She opened our eyes to how the Dutch lived so that we could apply our new knowledge to all Dutch art and not only the pieces we saw with her. Incredibly informative and personalized because we only had one other person on the tour for a total of three guests. Cecilia was fabulous and completely worth the money.

Selina Vean was absolutely fabulous. So informative and fun. What a great way to spend a day. She was very well educated on both museums and art history in general. Put together a great tour and the history behind each masterpiece.

Paola conducted two wonderful tours - one of the Rijksmuseum where she provided an in depth historical context of Rembrandt, the other Dutch Masters and their works and then of the Van Gogh Museum where her knowledge of Van Gogh - the tortured individual - helped to make his work more comprehensible and his genius more appreciated!

So worth doing. We are a family of four and were the only ones on the tour with Ilaria. She was a great guide and explained the background and context of paintings and artists that was memorable and really brought the paintings alive.

The Rijksmuseum’s Notable Works

The Dutch Golden Age in Holland was a time of prolific art and powerful commerce, and some of the most famous paintings on display at the Rijksmuseum include works from this time period. Be sure to see Rembrandt's “Nightwatch” (1650), showing the militia led by Frans Banning Cocq. Other featured 17th-century Flemish and Dutch masters include Jan Vermeer (“The Milkmaid,” “Woman in Blue Reading a Letter”), Frans Hals (“The Merry Drinker”), and Jan Steen (“The Merry Family”). Beyond the celebrated paintings, other notable galleries include Sculpture and Applied Art (Delftware, dollhouses, porcelain, furniture), Dutch History, and Asiatic Art in the Asian Pavilion, which includes the famous 12th-century bronze statue of a dancing Shiva.
