Amsterdam Museum
The Amsterdam Museum offers a crash course in the city’s fascinating history and culture. Located in a former convent and 17th-century orphanage, the museum narrates the history of Amsterdam chronologically from humble fishing village to the multicultural cosmopolitan city of today. Interactive and multimedia exhibits appeal to visitors of all ages.

The Basics
There are plenty of options for visiting the Amsterdam Museum. Consider purchasing an advance skip-the-line ticket, which allows you to breeze pass long entry lines with priority access. Explore the museum at your own pace or book a guided tour with a museum historian. If you plan to visit other top Amsterdam museums, pick up an I amsterdam City Card or Amsterdam and Holland Pass, and enjoy free or discounted admission to many area attractions.

Things to Know Before You Go

The Amsterdam Museum is ideal for first-time visitors to the city, and those particularly interested in history and culture.
The Little Orphanage exhibit is designed specially for children.
Much of the museum is accessible to wheelchair users, but small areas may not be.

How to Get There

The Amsterdam Museum is located in central Amsterdam, within walking distance of the floating flower-laden Bloemenmarkt, the Begijnhof, and Dam Square. From Amsterdam Centraal Station, take tram 2, 11, or 12 to the Spui stop, or metro line 52 to the Rokin stop. Although driving is not recommended in Amsterdam’s bustling city center, paid parking is available nearby on Nieuwezijds Kolk.

When to Get There

The Amsterdam Museum is open from 10am to 5pm daily. Although less busy than the more popular Amsterdam museums such as the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum, you’ll still want to visit early in the morning to avoid crowds.

Amsterdam Museum Highlights

“Amsterdam DNA” is an hour-long multimedia presentation, available in a variety of languages and with a family-friendly version, offering an engaging and concise overview of Amsterdam’s rich history. Kids enjoy discovering what life was like in a 17th-century orphanage with a tour of the little orphanage (Het Kleine Weeshuis). The museum also features rotating exhibits and special events, so check the museum calendar before your visit.

Hidden treasures of Amsterdam (walking tour)

Hidden treasures of Amsterdam (walking tour)

I have a great passion for the city I was born, raised and currently live in, coupled with my thirst for the history of Amsterdam. It gives me great pleasure to share my knowledge with you in a first class experience through the Old Centre of Amsterdam. Highly recommended. Martin has put a great deal of thought into the route and the perspective on Amsterdam, and had stores of information he provided as he saw what interested us most. Once he found out we had a flexible ending time, he happily extended our conversations and never rushed us. We took the tour half way through our visit, but it would be good at the beginning or end as well.
