The Basics

The Golden Temple includes a unique blend of Islamic and Hindu architecture and dates to the middle of the 19th century. The upper levels of the temple are covered with gold, and in the inner sanctum, priests and musicians spend the day chanting from the Guru Granth Sahib (the Sikh holy book). The temple is the main attraction in Amritsar. Book a guided tour to learn more about the temple and about the Sikh religion.

Amritsar Golden Temple Tour
Raj was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, answering all questions we had. His English was without fault. And he went out of his way to assist us. Even waiting with us until our taxi arrived. Raj showed us hidden gems in the area and explained everything thoroughly in an easy to understand way. A wonderful company and tour. Will be using again.

Golden Temple and Wagah Border Private Tour with Punjabi Lunch
Anil Sharma was my guide and he was super friendly, courteous and knowledgeable! The Golden Temple was a beautiful and spiritual experience and getting to visit the kitchens there and meet some of the volunteers and workers was a truly unexpected treat. Due to my flight schedule we were unable to do the border ceremony and instead visited other Hindu temples, had chai at a traditional tea shop and stopped by a local village. It was very authentic and I couldn’t recommend Anil enough!

Private Wagah Border Drama and the Golden Temple with Transfer
This was an excellent tour of the Golden Temple and the Wagah border ceremony. The tour guide was knowledgable and was able to take me through areas of the Golden Temple to see how they manage the kitchen. He answered my questions and gave clear directions as we were in a very crowded place. Later in the afternoon he suggested a restaurant I might like to go for lunch and then we went to the Border for the ceremony. I would recommend this tour.

Private 2-Day Tour to Golden Temple and Amritsar from Delhi by Train
We were met in Delhi and escort onto the train. We were given full details of who would be meeting us in Amritsar, including the guides phone number and car registration number. Our photograph was taken and passed to the guide so he could recognise us. All very reassuring. The trip went like clockwork. We were met, taken to our hotel, which was lovely, for a quick freshen up before going to the border ceremony. This was fantastic. A brilliant spectacle. We returned to the hotel for dinner and then off to the Golden Temple. Magnificent! Next morning a tour of Amritsa. It is truly a beautiful city. At 4 oclock we were escorted back to the station. Our train was on time but held up for 15 minutes outside Delhi station. No problem our guide was waiting as we left the carriage to drive us to our overnight accommodation. I would and already have recommended this tour to several friends staying in Goa. I will definitely be using this company for our next trips in India. They made life very easy. Thank you.

Private 2-Day Tour to Golden Temple and Amritsar from Delhi by Train
What an amazing trip! From start to finish the organisation was excellent. The pick up from the hotel was on time and we were taken to our seats on the train. The on board food supplied was of a good standard with free water. The guide Mr Goldy met us and we were taken to the India Pakistan border for the nightly ceremony of the flags being raised and lowered. Such a spectacle! 15000 people cheering for India in a well choreographed show. The Holy Book Ceremony at the Golden Temple in the evening was interesting to see. It was very crowded as we were there on the birthday of the founder of the Sikh religion. Mr Goldy made sure we did not get lost and found us good spots to see the proceedings. Touring the Golden Temple the next morning was humbling experience. Around 1500 meals are served at the Temple daily to all who want to eat. All are seated on the ground as one so no-one is above in status. The food is free and all administered by volunteers who are there 24/7 showing kindness and care for all. We spent a long time at the Temple sitting and drinking in the atmosphere of peace and tranquillity before the visit to the Jallianwala Bagh Memorial. We chose to take lunch at our hotel and freshen up before the 6 hour return train journey which was due to arrive at 2305 into Delhi but arrived nearly am hour late as had the outward journey. Sunil was there to collect us and return us to the hotel even though it was so late. This was an excellent trip.

Golden Temple and Wagah Border Private Tour with Punjabi Lunch
The best part of the tour is Chander the guide he is a living walking encyclopaedia . It’s overpriced for the sites it offers . Dont opt if you don’t have VIP pass for the Attari Wagah ceremony . Lunch could be arranged in a better restaurant since it gives bad impression .

How to Get There

The Golden Temple is located in the heart of Amritsar, about a 10-minute drive from the Amritsar Junctions railway station or a half-hour taxi ride from Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport. There are many daily trains that bring visitors to Amritsar from New Delhi; the quickest is the Amritsar Shatabdi, which takes just over six hours to travel between the cities.

When to Get There

The Golden Temple is open daily from early in the morning until late at night. You can also sleep at the temple complex—there’s a small hostel with beds reserved for foreigners, though it’s useful to bring a sleeping bag. Visit at twilight to see the evening sukhasan ritual, when the holy book is put to rest, or at sunrise, when the holy book is brought out again.

The Langar Tradition

One major feature of most Gurdwaras is the langar, a community kitchen in which all visitors can sit down to eat a free community meal together. Due to the sheer number of visitors to the Golden Temple, meals at the temple’s langar are served almost constantly. If you want to give back, there are donation boxes where you can discreetly contribute funds. You can also volunteer at the kitchen.
