The Basics

Petra is a highlight of the Middle East, renowned for its astonishing cliff-bound monuments and Greek-influenced architectural style. Thanks to the city’s Hollywood portrayal inIndiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Petra rose to international fame and is now one of Jordan’s most-visited attractions. Travelers usually approach the site through the long and narrowSiq, a chasm that opens up on the magnificent Treasury—Petra’s most-photographed building. Within the winding mountain ravines you’ll also find tombs, an 8,000-seat amphitheater, and the triumphal arch of the Temenos Gateway.

While it’s possible to catch Petra’s highlights on a day trip from Eilat, Jerusalem, or Amman, there’s enough to see to warrant a multi-day stay. Petra is often included on longer tours of Israel and Jordan that typically include visits to Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, Jerusalem, and Bethlehem, depending on the length and option chosen. For a personalized experience, opt for a private tour.

Day Tour to Petra from Amman
The courtesy of the driver was helpful. We had Ali as a guide into Petra. He has been a guide for 26 years and everyone we encountered knew and respected him. Petra was awesome. Exactly what we expected! Because of COVID19 there were few other tourists so we could travel at our own pace and get uncrowded pictures!

Amman Petra Full-Day Trip
Petra was amazing. It’s a long drive from Amman but we’ll worth it. My guide and driver Muhammad was just awesome. He really took care of me and was very knowledgeable and friendly. A great guy!! At Petra, I recommend getting a guide to really do some real hiking and see it from the highest points but they are a little pricey!! It really was a “once in a lifetime “ experience. Thank you Viator and especially to Muhammad; a wonderful guide to have!!!
Great highlights of Jordan in two days

2-Day Tour: Petra, Wadi Rum, and Dead Sea from Amman
The tour was very good overall. Our driver, Morad, was polite, kind, and knowledgeable. The car he drove us in was new and comfortable. He took very cool pictures of us at Wadi Rum. My husband and I saw and experienced a lot in two days. It was definitely worth hiring a tour guide at Petra. I would’ve given this tour a 5/5, but I got sick from the food at the desert camp, so that put a damper on the trip.

Private Tour: Petra and Little Petra Day Trip from Aqaba
Petra was on our bucket list and worth the 10 year wait. Our driver was just like a guide. He was wonderful andpersonable and on our way back he had car troubles. It was a new Mercedes’ so who knows what went wrong. However his first concern was us and he was like a magician getting a friend of his family to taxi us to the port on time where his dad met us took us first for special treats and then to our ships doorstep. Onasis we love you!
fatastic experience with a great guider.

Private 2 hour horse riding tour: Petra High Place of Sacrifice
Tried to upload amazing photos, no luck! Ahmed was a great guide! I told him up front I was an experienced rider and his mare Sarah was lovely and responsive. The views were incomparable, the history fascinating. The Bedouin horse tour operators have suffered greatly during COVID, so if you’re a rider at any level, support them if you can. Highly recommend!!!!

How to Get There

Petra is 150 miles (240 kilometers) south of Jordan, near the town of Wadi Mousa. It takes roughly 20 minutes to walk from town to the archaeological site. A guided day tour is the most convenient way to get there, but Wadi Mousa can also be reached by JETT bus from Amman or Aqaba. Transportation by taxi is also an option.

When to Get There

Plan to arrive at the main entrance first thing in the morning to explore the site before crowds begin to arrive. Spring and autumn offer the best weather, with warm days and cool nights. Expect temperatures over 100°F (38°C) in summer.

Petra Monastery Hike

While the Treasury ranks as Petra’s most famous structure, the Monastery is just as impressive and often much less crowded, due in part to the strenuous hour-long hike necessary to get there. Those who brave the journey up some 800 rock-cut steps are rewarded with a chance to explore Petra’s largest carved monument. The path up to the Monastery sits mostly in the shade during the afternoon.
